Recent Ransomware Attacks: How Darkhorse Protects Its Managed Services Client
“It’s on track to be one of the biggest recorded ransomware attacks ever, with tens of thousands of infected computers in nearly 100 countries.” Source: CNN
What is it?
The ransomware called “WannaCry” locks down all the files on an infected computer and asks the computer’s administrator to pay to regain control for them. Researchers say it is spreading through a Microsoft Windows exploit called “Eternal Blue,” which Microsoft released a patch for in March.
Affected machines have six hours to pay up and every few hours the ransom goes up. Additionally, the ransomware has “hunting” technology which allows it to move freely within an internal network. Thus, when it hits one computer the entire network may be compromised in a matter of seconds.
How Are We Protected?
Darkhorse Tech uses a multi-phase approach:
-First: In accordance to HIPAA Regulations, we perform Patch Management on all workstations in your offices, and the hole in which “WannaCry” could get through, is not open.
-Second: Anti-Virus is running on all workstations with advanced behavioral analytics. We called our Anti-Virus provider Webroot and they confirmed that if the “WannaCry” Ransomware was on the computer itself it would have been immediately detected and stopped. HIPAA Law states that having Business Grade Anti-Virus software is mandatory.
-Third: All critical production servers are backed up locally and to the cloud so there is no chance of losing critical data. HIPAA Law requires backups and to have all backups encrypted.
-Fourth: Advanced Firewall Systems with Unified Threat Management. The firewall is the passive protection for the office (also a HIPAA Requirement). This is the protection from anyone getting into the system from the outside.
